Born Into Brothels

Born Into the Brothels is another documentary which I feel echoes the sentiment of The Gleaners and I, and this sentiment is that no matter how bad you may feel things may be, there is always someone who is in a worse situation. Seeing the innocent, adorable children of the brothels and the despicable living conditions they are in is truly a saddening thing. Kochi, one of the little girls scrubs the pots and pans, fetches water and even searchers for curry and rice at eleven at night sometimes. These are chores that a 10-year-old should not have to be responsible for. It is also detestable for Kochi to have to be yelled at as she is in the documentary, the scolding is followed by a string of expletives that should not have been directed at her, especially considering that the circumstances she finds herself in are in no way her fault. Kochi goes on to say that she knows an education would be a ticket out of that hell, and when she says that, it makes one appreciate even more the simple freedoms of gaining an education that so many of us enjoy. As the movie develops, the audience sees that it is this simple freedom and this ticket out of the hell they are in that the photography teacher is trying to find for these children. Teaching the children a photography class makes the teacher realize their talents and how they could be utilized in an educational environment. It is uplifting to see how some children in the end have taken advantage of this opportunity and heartbreaking to see how external forces or even themselves prevent themselves from obtaining an education.
