The Gleaners and I-Redone

Agnes Verda's "The Gleaners and I" is a must-see documentary that captures the sentiment of people in unfortunate circumstances and how they make the most out of what little they have. I believe that everyone should watch this movie. It was interesting to see Verda's close-ups of her hand in several shots and how she remarked the horror of her wrinkles as a morose testament to the passing of time. She seems to juxtapose the importance of gleaning with this sadness that she feels. To me, I feel like she juxtaposed very well the feeling of sadness about how time had passed to the sadness of the dire straits that forced the gypsy families and single mothers to glean for various foods that are so easily obtained by more fortunate ones such as you and I. A lighter aspect to this "cinema-direct" style film is that a man who later appears in the film talks about his trash that he turned into a monument, he says "I make sentences out of things". He is turning a bad situation into a good one by making something out of what would seem to be nothing to someone just stealing a quick glance. The gleaners are also making the most out of what seems to be nothing, taking food that would otherwise go to waste and surviving. This documentary is one of survival, and I feel that she captured this with a personal warmth.
