"Speak to Her"

Pedro Almodovar's 2002 romantic drama "Speak to Her" is a film which everyone should watch because its topic of communication and relationships is one which everyone can relate to. Because the film is centered around communication and relationships, the title could not be more fitting. It also remarkably connects to the old adage "You don't know what you've got until it is gone."
The film's protagonists are two couples, Benigno and Alicia and Marco and Lydia. After Alicia slips into a coma following a car accident, she is left completely unable to fend for herself and Benigno must do everything for her, including bathe her, comb her hair and dress her. The irony of this situation becomes clear here because Benigno, more than ready, willing, and able to take care of her in this way, finally gains the chance to have a relationship with her, a relationship he never could seem to establish with her when she was conscious. Besides taking care of her, he and Alicia's dance instructor, Katerina, talk to her often about the day's events, with Benigno, what movie he saw that day and with Katerina, what dance her class was performing and to what music. Talking to Alicia preserves normalcy and enables Benigno and Katerina to maintain a stability with Alicia even though she is in her coma. Herein lies the importance of the title, "Speak to Her", because later, when Benigno meets Marco, whose girlfriend also has fallen into a coma after being gored by a bull, he tells him to "speak to her" and tell her all of the things he never told her, or was too scared to tell her before her accident.
Everyone alive belongs in some type of relationship and the glue of these relationships is communication. "Speak to Her" is a film that everyone should see because it sends the message of the importance of relationships and how communicating with people is so important. Also, the fact that these young women slipped into comas before their lovers and friends could tell them how they felt conveys the message of the old adage "You don't know what you've got until its gone" because both Benigno and Marco never had the chance to express themselves when their girlfriends were alive and they finally realized their love for these women after they had slipped into unconsciousness.
